Past

THE DAY I RECEIVED the acceptance letter from Julliard was the worst day of my meager existence.

The moment my fingers ripped the paper, and my eyes confirmed my dreams were inevitably coming true; I was officially accepted to Julliard. I knew I had to go to Galel. I had to deliver the news face to face. Share with him my joy.

I drove to Yale in a blissful state of happiness. After I clumsily parked my car taking two parking spaces, I ran through the parking lot and climbed the stairs skipping steps.

My fisted hand knocked at the door as my feet fidgeted with the nervous anticipation of telling him the best thing in the world had just happened to me.

A few seconds passed, but there was no response. Shit, I was so anxious to see him that I hadn’t considered the fact that he might not be home. Had his car been parked outside? I didn’t recall. Then, I remembered, that he would sometimes tutor a classmate. So, I tried the door knob, hoping it was unlocked. It was.

Then, I hesitated before pushing the door open. An eerie feeling washed over me. It was the same feeling I had felt before, many times, a sense that some evil eyes were fixed on me observing my every movement, ready to pounce.

With a shudder, I discarded the feeling and pushed the door open, the silent hinges did nothing to announce my presence. I stepped into the threshold and swung the door closed behind me. My eyes, cast down, zoomed to a small rubber lying on the floor. I stopped in my tracks. It was a purple condom tied in the middle. It was the kind I had brought for us the week before—Galel’s favorite brand.

I remained rooted to the wooden floor, my eyes unblinkingly fixed on the condom as if it was a cobra ready to strike and not just an object. I needed to move. I needed to look around to certify that I was wrong. All I had to do was raise my eyes.

My mind relentlessly went over an array of possible explanations for the presence of that condom on the floor. Perhaps it was in Galel’s pocket from last time we had had sex. Gross and unsanitary but possible. Maybe, he had found it between the sheets and had carelessly tossed it on the floor, like he often did after we had made love. And it had been there since.

I considered turning around and leaving. I even saw through my mind's eye, the tread of my legs moving me away from it. From the inside, the door knob would be colder, so in my mind, I anticipated the feeling of my fingers wrapping around the cold metal. Galel kept his thermostat low and his windows open. His room always had a chill to it. He liked it that way. I liked it too. It made for good cuddling between his heavy blankets.

I had to make a decision. Raise my eyes and confront the truth, whatever it was, or turn around and flee.
